University of Johannesburg W|RSETA Bursary South Africa; The UJ Department of Marketing Management is part of the Universities College of Business and Economics – one of 8 faculties at the institution. The UJ Department of Marketing Management offers a range of undergraduate degrees and diplomas, postgraduate degrees and short courses, in the field of Marketing and Retail.
The Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W|RSETA) is a public organisation, formed to encourage skill development in the Wholesale and Retail sector by way of grants, bursaries, training and learnerships.
W|RSETA is one of the UJ Marketing Sponsors, alongside other companies including Clover, PPS, Juta, Primedia and Van Schaik.
ABOUT THE UJ W|RSETA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED | SELECTION
The University of Johannesburg, partnered with the W|RSETA is inviting students to apply for bursary funding, for the 2023 academic year..
The bursary will cover Master’s and PhD studies at the University of Johannesburg, preferably within these research areas:
- Retail Business Management
- Retail Marketing
- Wholesale and Retail
- Wholesale Business Development

MORE ABOUT THE UJ W|RSETA BURSARY PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED | SELECTION
The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, as well as cover for data collection and language editing. Bursary awards will be paid into the student’s UJ student account.
The bursary will be awarded for 2 years of Master’s degree studies and 4 years of PhD degree studies. Funding will be awarded each year, dependent on satisfactory academic progress (bursary recipients’ supervisors must send a letter regarding your progress each year, in order to release the funding for the following year).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UJ W|RSETA BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Master’s degree applicants:
- You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
- You must be registered to study at the University of Johannesburg for the 2023 academic year.
- Your Master’s or PhD proposal must be approved and must focus on the preference areas above
- You must NOT be receiving any other bursary funding
- You must have completed a BCom (Honours) degree in Marketing or Retail (or a related NQF 8 level qualification)
- You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Research Methodology at the NQF 8 level, and a minimum overall average of 60% for your degree
- You must be registered within the allowed registration period as stated by the College of Business | Economics (CBE) for a Masters’s degree (1 to 2 years for full-time studies and 2 to 3 years for part-time studies)
- You must be passionate about Retail
PhD degree applicants:
- You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
- You must be registered to study at the University of Johannesburg for the 2023 academic year.
- Your Master’s or PhD proposal must be approved and must focus on the preference areas above
- You must NOT be receiving any other bursary funding
- You must have completed a Master’s degree in Marketing Management (or a related NQF 9 level qualification)
- You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Research Methodology at the NQF 8 level, and a minimum overall average of 65% for your degree
- You must be registered within the allowed registration period as stated by the College of Business | Economics (CBE) for a Masters’s degree (2 to 4 years for full-time studies and 2 to 5 years for part-time studies)
- You must be passionate about Retail

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE UJ W|RSETA BURSARY
New Enrolments:
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Marketing Management website: W|RSETA UJ Bursary Application 2022. Applicants must follow the full application procedure and submit the required documents before the closing date.
If the Department Research and Ethics Committee (DREC) approves your proposal, please email wrsetagauteng@gmail.com – they will then contact you with a list of supporting documents required to complete your application.
Current Masters and PhD students:
Download and complete the W|RSETA UJ Bursary Application Form 2022 (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document or passport (certified copy)
- Full official academic records, with results of all levels of tertiary study (only academic records with marks, no certificates)
- Curriculum Vitae, with the following details: field of study, qualifications, employment history, awards received and achievements, contactable references
- Biographical sketch of information not already disclosed in the application form, including a brief description of your research interest, awards received and achievements, membership of national and international scientific committees, and other tangible recognition
- Short motivational letter explaining why you should be awarded the bursary, as well as your study commitment or outputs for 2022 (maximum one A4 page, Arial font, font size 11)
- Letter of reference regarding your academic performance
- Letter from your UJ supervisor, including an overview of the study, progress with your studies, anticipated date of submission of dissertation/ thesis, and your suitability for the bursary
- Letter from your UJ supervisor, providing your formal registration for the Masters/ Doctoral qualification at UJ
