Canon Collins Education Journalism Scholarship South Africa; ABOUT THE COMPANY – CANON COLLINS
The Canon Collins Trust has been running scholarship programmes since 1981, for students from southern African countries. The Trust has supported over 4 000 scholars, from 14 countries and today the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland and Malawi.
ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS EDUCATION JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED | COVERAGE VALUE
The Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Mail and Guardian, is inviting students to apply for the Education Journalism Scholarship, for the 2023 academic year.. The scholarship covers Masters in Journalism, Communications or Media studies. This scholarship is available through the support of the Sol Plaatje Educational Project (SPEP).
The scholarship will provide the following benefits:
- R60 000 per year towards study fees
- a 12-month paid internship at the Mail and Guardian in 2022
- mentorship from a Dr Sara Black – a respected Educationalist and Education Writer alumna
- the chance to enhance your networks, strengthen your academic and leadership skills through organised events

MORE ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS EDUCATION JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – SELECTION
Scholars will be selected based on 6 main criteria:
1) Academic record – candidates must have a strong academic record for their years of study completed.
2) References – candidates must provide references who can attest to their studies.
3) Working experience – candidates with paid or voluntary work experience in the field of study will receive preference.
4) Leadership qualities – candidates will be required to prove how their leadership skills have developed in the workplace, in their studies or personal life.
5) Commitment to your community and country – candidates who show a strong interest in positively contributing to the prosperity of their community or to South Africa, will receive preference.
6) Completion of the application form – candidates must be fluent in English, answer all questions correctly and honestly, complete and submit the application by the deadline.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview in October or November 2021, and thereafter all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS EDUCATION JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African national
- You must reside in South Africa
- You must have completed an Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) OR you must be graduating by the end of 2021
- You must be studying for a 2 year course or applying for a 1 year full-time Masters course in any of these fields: Journalism, Communication or Media Studies
- You must be studying or applying for studies at a university in South Africa
- You must be willing and able to partake in a 12-month paid internship in 2022 – at the Mail and Guardian as an Education Reporter
- You must be committed to social justice in Southern Africa
- You must intend on promoting positive social change, especially in the area of Education
- Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate commitment to education matters in South Africa (by way of work experience, volunteering or as an activist)

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE CANON COLLINS EDUCATION JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP

Students must download and read the Canon Collins Education Journalism Scholarship Guidelines (.pdf) before applying.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver’s License (certified copy)
- Refugee status, if applicable (certified copy)
- Degree certificates, if available (certified copy)
- Academic transcripts (certified copy)
- PhD proposal, if applicable
- 2 latest payslips, if employed
Shortlisted candidates will also be required to submit the following:
- 2 references, relating to your suitability for the scholarship (1 from your current or most recent academic supervisor AND 1 from your employer if employed or 1 from voluntary work if never been employed, or 2 academic references)
- Supporting statement from your supervisor, if applying for PhD study
