ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – MASTERCARD FOUNDATION
Mastercard Foundation Scholarship South Africa | The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) aims to develop Africa’s next generation of leaders. The Program provides financial, social, and academic support to talented students who lack the financial resources to complete their education.
The Scholars Program is implemented through partner universities and non-governmental organizations, with the application process and decision-making managed by each partner.
ABOUT THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Pretoria (UP), is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2023 academic year..
Scholarships will be awarded to academically talented young Africans, for Postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Pretoria (UP).
The University of Cape Town will award the scholarship for studies in these fields:
- Honours and Masters in Engineering and the Built Environment, Commerce, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, or Sciences
The University of Pretoria will award the scholarship for studies in these fields:
- Honours and Masters in Commerce (Accounting Sciences, Economics, Financial Sciences)
- Honours and Masters in Natural and Agricultural Sciences
- Honours and Masters in Humanities (Political Studies or International Studies only)
- Honours and Masters in Engineering (continuing students only)

MORE ABOUT THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – UCT APPLICANTS
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town will provide students with financial, academic, mentoring, leadership development, and social and post-graduation support. The aim of the programme is to equip graduates with the required values, knowledge, skills, and leadership to fuel economic and social progress across Africa. The programme’s academic support includes tutoring, language training, writing circles and guidance counselling.
UCT will award 10 scholarships for Honours studies and 55 scholarships for Masters’ studies.

MORE ABOUT THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – UP APPLICANTS
The MCFSP (Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program) offers a full scholarship for study towards a postgraduate degree at UP. After graduation, students must return to their home country and give back to their communities.
The programme is aimed at academically talented, but economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values evidenced by their leadership.
The full scholarship offers comprehensive support and learning opportunities to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in the economy, and make positive impacts in their communities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
University of Cape Town applications:
- You must be a citizen of an African country
- You must apply or have applied to UCT for academic study and placement
- You must intend on studying full time towards your first year of an Honours or Masters qualification at UCT, in 2022 (the scholarship will NOT cover: undergraduate, postgraduate diploma, PhD study programmes)
- You must meet UCT’s Terms of Reference and Conditions of Award
- You must meet the eligibility criteria of your intended course of study (contact the faculty for further information on what is required)
- You must have a strong academic record
- You must be from an economically disadvantaged background
- You must have leadership potential and have previously acted in a leadership capacity
University of Pretoria applications:
- You must be a citizen of an African country
- You must apply or have applied to UP for academic study and placement
- You must have completed a bachelor’s degree
- You must intend on studying full time towards a Honours or Masters’s qualification at UP, in 2022 (the scholarship will NOT cover PhD study programmes)
- You must complete your qualification in the minimum degree period
- You must NOT be receiving any other bursary, scholarship or other funding (excluding UP achievement awards)
- You must have a strong academic record
- You must be from an economically disadvantaged background
- You must have leadership potential and have previously acted in a leadership capacity

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
University of Cape Town applications:

University of Pretoria applications:

Applications must be submitted via email to: mcfsp@up.ac.za
(Insert the words “UP Mastercard Foundation Scholarship” in the email subject line).
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online scholarship application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
University of Cape Town applications:
- Identity Document, Passport or Refugee Papers (certified copy)
- All current and previous tertiary education transcripts (certified copies)
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
- 2 Academic Referee Reports from academics who have taught or supervised you during secondary and/or tertiary level of study (to be completed on the Academic Referee Form)
- Affidavit declaration, to be completed by hand, signed and stamped by the commissioner of oaths (to be completed on the Scholarship Affidavit Form)
University of Pretoria applications:
- Identity Document (certified copy)
- UP proof of provisional admission or application for admission letter
- Proof of parents, guardians, spouse or own gross income (3 months payslips/ pension advice/ financial statements/ allowances/ maintenance/ affidavit)
- Parents, guardians, spouse or own bank account statements/ tax returns/ loan documents and any other information as evidence of your family’s ability to contribute to your education

UCT applicants: 25 September 2022 (at 11:59pm SAST).
UP applicants: 31 October 2022.
