ABOUT THE COMPANY – DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHERIES

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) was formed in 2009 and is responsible for managing and supporting the agricultural sector in South Africa, and ensuring that all citizen have access to safe and nutritious food.

DAFF is under the responsibility of Senzeni Zokwana, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Some of the departments goals include: efficient and effective governance; sustained and sufficient management of natural resources; contributions to the countries economic growth and development; successful risk management systems and national regulatory services; greater production of timber products, fibre and food; a united and transformed sector.
 

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The DAFF bursary programme is aimed at Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, who are studying within a field which is considered a “critical scarce skill” within the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sector.

 

Bursaries will be awarded within the following fields of study:
Undergraduate studies:

  • Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) (B.Sc.)
  • Viticulture and Oenology (B.Sc.)
  • Marine Biology (B.Sc.)
  • Oceanography and Marine Biology (B.Sc.)
  • Ichthyology (specialising in Aquaculture) (B.Sc.)
  • Forestry and Wood Science (B.Sc.)
  • Plant Pathology (B.Sc.)
  • Entomology (B.Sc.)
  • Food Science (B.Sc.)
  • Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.)
  • Food Technology (National Diploma)
  • Forestry (National Diploma)
  • Marine Science (National Diploma)

Postgraduate studies:

  • All agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields linked to DAFF priority research projects (B.Sc., B.Tech., M.Sc., D.Tech., Hons. M.Tech. and Ph.D.)

 

MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & TERTIARY INSTITUTES

The following expenses will be covered by DAFF: tuition, prescribed books, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance.

Postgraduate students will also receive a monthly allowance and be appointed a mentor.
 

Please note that certain fields of study are limited to the following tertiary institutions:

  • B.Sc. Bioresource Engineering: only available at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • B.Sc. Oceanography and Marine Biology: only available at the University of Cape Town
  • B.Sc. Viticulture and Oenology & B.Sc. Plant Pathology & B.Sc. Forestry and Wood Science: only available at the University of Stellenbosch
  • B.Sc. Ichthyology (specialising in Aquaculture): only available at Rhodes University
  • B.V.Sc. Veterinary Science: only available at the University of Pretoria
  • National Diploma in Marine Science: only available at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
  • National Diploma in Forestry: only available at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Completed Matric OR currently in Matric
  • Studying or intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Achieved the following minimum results in Matric:
    • National Diploma students: level “4” (50% to 59%) for Mathematics and Physical Science
    • ALL other B.Sc. qualifications: level “5” (60% to 69%) for Mathematics and Physical Science
    • B.Sc. Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) & B.V.Sc. Veterinary Science: level “6” (70% to 79%) for Mathematics and Physical Science
  • NOT a staff members of the department
  • *Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students and those from poor and rural communities. Disabled applicants are also encouraged to apply
