About the Fellowship Provider – Allan Gray Orbis Foundation
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was established in 2005 by Allan Gray with a vision to make a long-term impact in Southern Africa by developing future entrepreneurs. The foundation focuses on nurturing young individuals who have the potential to create businesses, drive innovation, and contribute to economic growth.
Funding for the foundation comes from a portion of the profits generated by Allan Gray Limited. Over the years, the foundation has expanded its reach and now operates in multiple African countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini, and Botswana.
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme is designed to support students financially while also equipping them with entrepreneurial skills, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities.
Fields Covered by the Fellowship Programme
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is inviting applications for its 2027 Fellowship Programme, aimed at students who wish to pursue undergraduate studies.
The fellowship supports a wide range of degree programmes at selected South African universities, including:

Students must study at one of the partner institutions, such as Wits, UJ, UCT, Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, UWC, Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, University of the Free State, UKZN, or TSIBA Business School.
The main goal of the programme is to develop entrepreneurial thinkers who are motivated to create opportunities, start businesses, and contribute meaningfully to society. Successful applicants will be selected as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows.

Funding Value and Benefits
The level of financial support provided depends on the applicant’s household income:

Household income below R1 million per year: Full funding, including tuition fees, accommodation, meals, book allowance, monthly stipend, academic support, and access to counselling services.

Household income between R1 million and R1.5 million: Covers tuition, accommodation, meals, and access to academic and counselling support.

Household income above R1.5 million: Covers tuition fees, along with academic and counselling support services.
Beyond financial assistance, fellows gain access to a wide range of development opportunities. These include mentorship from experienced professionals, participation in entrepreneurship workshops, and access to a structured entrepreneurial curriculum. Students also attend annual conferences, networking events, and may explore business funding opportunities through E Squared, a partner initiative of the foundation.
Selection Process
The selection process for the Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship is highly competitive and involves multiple stages:

Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews around 31 July 2026

Selection Camp: Final shortlisted applicants will attend a selection camp in September 2026

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must be a South African citizen

Must be 21 years old or younger in 2026

Must be in Matric in 2026
-
Must achieve at least 60% in Mathematics OR 80% in Mathematical Literacy (Grade 11 results)
-
Must have a minimum overall average of 70% in Grade 11 (excluding Life Orientation)
-
Must intend to study one of the approved degree programmes in 2027
-
Must plan to study at one of the partner universities listed above

Must demonstrate a strong interest in entrepreneurship and leadership
-
Must be passionate about contributing to the future of South Africa
Failure to meet these requirements may result in disqualification.
