The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), in partnership with Google DeepMind, invites you to apply for the fully funded AI for Science Master’s program for the 2025–2026 academic year.

About AIMS and Google DeepMind

AIMS is a pan-African network of centers of excellence for postgraduate education, research, and outreach in mathematical sciences. Google DeepMind, a leading AI research laboratory, collaborates with AIMS to nurture the next generation of AI researchers and practitioners across Africa.

Scholarship Overview

The AI for Science Master’s program is a one-year, fully residential course that combines taught modules with a research component. The curriculum focuses on applying AI to scientific discovery, equipping students with the skills to tackle complex scientific challenges using AI methodologies.

The scholarship provides comprehensive support, including:

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Citizenship: Be a citizen of any African country.
Residency: Reside in Africa at the time of application.
Academic Qualifications: Hold a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year degree with an Honours year by August 2025 (December 2025 for Southern African applicants).
Field of Study: Background in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or related disciplines with strong computational and mathematical components.
Prior AIMS Scholarship: Must not have previously received an AIMS scholarship.
Passion for AI and Mathematics: Demonstrated interest in AI, machine learning, and mathematics.

Applications open on Monday, 13 January 2025, and must be submitted online by 11:59 PM SAST on 21 March 2025.

Applicants need to provide:

Academic Transcripts: Complete records of undergraduate studies.
Mathematics and Coding Responses: Answers to specific questions provided in the application portal.
Curriculum Vitae: Detailed resume highlighting academic and professional experiences.
Motivational Letter: Approximately 500 words outlining your interest in the program and future aspirations.

The application includes several mathematics questions and a coding problem to assess problem-solving approaches. It’s advisable to begin the application early to ensure thoughtful and thorough responses.

Interview Process

Shortlisted candidates will participate in online interviews scheduled for May 2025.
