SABS ARSO Essay Competition 2025: Empowering South African Students

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is excited to announce the ARSO Essay Competition for 2025, inviting South African tertiary students to participate in this prestigious event. This competition, in collaboration with the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), aims to foster a deeper understanding of standardization’s role in sustainable development.

About SABS and ARSO

SABS is South Africa’s national standards authority, responsible for promoting standardization and quality assurance across various sectors. ARSO, established in 1977 by the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), strives to harmonize African standards and conformity assessment procedures to reduce technical barriers to trade and promote industrialization across the continent.

Competition Theme

The 2025 essay competition focuses on the theme:

“Role of Education about Standardisation (EaS) in shaping Education and African Students for the sustainable Development opportunities and challenges in the 21st Century.”

This topic encourages students to explore how education on standardization can influence sustainable development in Africa.

Prizes and Awards

The competition offers both national and continental prizes:

National Prizes (Coordinated by SABS):

  • 1st Prize: Bursary valued at R150,000 and USD 1,000
  • 2nd Prize: Bursary valued at R130,000
  • 3rd Prize: Bursary valued at R120,000
  • 4th and 5th Prizes: Cash prizes of R15,000 each

Continental Prizes (Coordinated by ARSO):

  • 1st Prize: USD 1,000 and a fully sponsored trip to the ARSO General Assembly in Zanzibar, Tanzania
  • 2nd Prize: USD 800
  • 3rd Prize: USD 500

Eligibility Criteria

To participate, applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens
  • Be currently registered at a tertiary institution recognized by the National Department of Education and Council of Higher Education in South Africa
  • Be 35 years old or younger

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit:

  • An essay (1,000 to 1,200 words) written in English, adhering to the following format:
    • Size 12, Century Gothic font
    • Double-spaced
    • Original work, properly referenced
    • Structured and justified formatting
  • A copy of their Identity Document or Passport
  • A completed and stamped registration form

Submission Details

All applications must be submitted via email to ESSAYCOMPETITION@sabs.co.za with the subject line “SABS ARSO Essay Competition 2025.” The deadline for submission is March 31, 2025. Late applications will not be considered.
