ATNS AIMO Bursary South Africa | The Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) are South Africa’s experts in air traffic, navigation, as well as training and associated services. The companies services are also used across a large portion of the Atlantic and Southern Indian Ocean.

The companies vision is to be the go-to supplier of Air Traffic Management solutions within Africa and in certain international markets.

The ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) provides their staff members with Air Traffic Services and Engineering Training, as well as providing aviation-related and safety-related courses across Africa and the Middle East.

Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) AIMO Bursaries

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programmes, for the 2024 academic year.

ATNS are offering 2 types of bursaries, for students to train towards a career in the aviation industry. Studies will be conducted at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) based in Bonaero Park, Johannesburg.

1) Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary
ATSO’s assist Air Traffic Controllers with their daily duties, one of the main tasks being to answer phone calls and using the radio transceiver for air traffic related activities. ATSO’s are important members of the air navigation team, and may have the opportunity to develop skills in the following careers within Air Traffic Management: Aerodrome Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO1) Approach Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO2/3) Area Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO3).

2) Target Generating Officer (TGO) Bursary
TGO’s support operational training by simulating live scenarios for controllers in order to enhance and maintain their ATC skill. The TGO is the pilot in the equation. Students will have the following responsibilities: create and program training exercises and ensure alignment with the live operational environment; maintain operational data and documentation to ensure readiness for disaster recovery; train new operational technology, systems and procedures that are earmarked for operational deployment; overall support of all training initiatives including for external clients.

Both ATNS training programme includes 3 phases:
1. Core Content Course: a 21 week theory-based foundation course, hosted at ATA in Gauteng
2. ATS Rating Course: a practical based course to supplements theory training, hosted at ATA in Gauteng
3. ATS Validation: a practical module of on-the-job training, taking place at OR Tambo International or Cape Town International airport.

MORE ABOUT THE ATNS BURSARY PROGRAMMES – EXPENSES COVERED & SELECTION

Bursaries will provide cover for the following expenses:

  • shared accommodation, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA
  • transport to and from the ATNS ATA, as per study and practical requirements
  • meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner each day)
  • monthly allowance
  • 10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinator

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ATNS BURSARY PROGRAMMES

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
1) Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older when starting your studies
  • You must be currently in Matric (in 2023) or have completed Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric
  • You must be medically fit
  • You must be willing to relocate anywhere in South Africa
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in line with the Employment Equity Plan
  • Students from designated groups as per the Employment Equity Act of 1998 are encouraged to apply

2) Target Generating Officer (TGO) Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older when starting your studies
  • You must be currently in Matric (in 2023) or have completed Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric
  • You must be medically fit
  • You must be willing to relocate anywhere in South Africa

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

ATNS BURSARY SELECTION PROCESS

Bursaries will be awarded based on the following selection process:
1. Personality Assessment: this will determine if you will do well in the specific role.
2. Ability testing (various tests at different stages). Candidates will undergo the following tests: English reading and comprehension skills, Mathematical problem solving, Detail perception, Spatial reasoning and Diagramming (following instructions using diagram).
3. Candidates who pass the first 2 steps will be invited to a panel interview.
4. After successfully completing the panel interview, candidates will be required to undergo a mandatory medical assessment and verification.
5. Successful candidates may be offered a bursar contract.

After placement on the programme the bursar is placed on a fixed term contract. Placement will be based on availability of vacancies and will be in line with ATNS’ Recruitment Policy.
