ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – UMGENI WATER
Umgeni Water Postgraduate Bursary South Africa | Umgeni Water, established in 1974, is a state-owned enterprise (SOE) that provides bulk water and related services to residents within KwaZulu-Natal. Umgeni Water is KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest supplier of bulk potable water, servicing an area of more than 21 000 sqkm, and is South Africa’s second-largest Water Board.
The company reports to the Department of Water and Sanitation directly, is headquartered in Pietermaritzburg, and is supported by offices in Ulwandle and Izintaba.
Umgeni Water’s assets include 13 dams, 11 water treatment works, 18 small water treatment works, 19 borehole schemes, over 700 km of pipelines, and over 60 km of tunnels.
ABOUT THE UMGENI WATER BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Umgeni Water is inviting students to apply for their postgraduate bursaries, for the 2024 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded for Masters’s and Ph.D. degree studies, focused on research in the following 5IR-related fields:
- 21st-century water infrastructure systems and management
- Advanced materials
- Advanced sensor platforms
- Artificial intelligence
- Big Data Analytics
- Blockchain
- Data Science
- Drones and autonomous vehicles
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- New computing technologies
- Real-time, interoperable water data
- Remote sensing (Satellite Imagery)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UMGENI WATER BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to meet all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must have completed a 4-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Science
- You must be interested in studying toward a Masters’s or Ph.D. degree, focused on one of the research areas listed above
