About the Bursary Provider – SAIIPL
South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law is a leading professional organisation representing specialists in intellectual property (IP) law in South Africa. The institute promotes excellence, ethical practice, and professional development in key IP areas such as trade marks, copyright, and patents.
SAIIPL also plays an important role in strengthening the country’s legal framework for intellectual property while supporting the growth of future legal professionals.
About the SAIIPL Bursary Programme 2026
The South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law is inviting applications for its 2026 bursary programme, aimed at students pursuing careers in intellectual property law.
Fields Covered
A total of 4 bursaries will be awarded for:

LLB (Undergraduate Law Degree)
-
LLM (Postgraduate Law Degree)
Bursaries are split into two focus areas:

Patent Law (2 bursaries)
-
Trade Mark and/or Copyright Law (2 bursaries)
Bursary Value & Selection Process
Each bursary is valued at R70,000, which can be used to cover tuition or outstanding academic fees.
This initiative is designed to support previously disadvantaged students and help develop skilled professionals in the field of intellectual property law.

Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the SAIIPL bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident

Must be between 18 and 30 years old
-
Must be studying towards an LLB or LLM at a recognised South African university
-
Must demonstrate strong academic potential
-
Must qualify for admission as an attorney under the Legal Practice Act
-
Must have completed at least one course from the World Intellectual Property Organization (e.g., DL001 course)
-
Must have a strong interest in Intellectual Property Law (including patents, trade marks, copyright, and related areas)

Must demonstrate financial need
