African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Bursaries South Africa 2024 – 2025

ABOUT THE BURSAR

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a centre for research and education within the mathematical sciences field – based in Cape Town, South Africa. AIMS was founded in 2003 and currently have 3 different bursary opportunities for postgraduate students.
 

ABOUT THE BURSARY

Masters and Doctoral studies at the AIMS Research Centre: students who undertake studies at the AIMS SA Research centre will receive funding for tuititon, accommodation and, food.

Masters studies (Half Bursary): students who have completed their studies at AIMS could qualify for a half bursary (to the amount of R43 000) towards a Masters degree at a SA university. The bursary is paid in 2 installments – one on registration and the other when a sufficient progress report is received (9 months later).

 

PhD studies (Half Bursary): students who have completed their studies at AIMS could qualify for a half bursary (to the amount of R90 000) towards a PhD degree at a SA university. The bursary is paid in 3 installments – R40k during the 1st year of study, R25k during the 2nd year of study and R25k during the 3rd year of study.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:
Masters and Doctoral studies at the AIMS Research Centre:

  • South African citizen,
  • Preference will be given to students with a disadvantaged background, however all students are welcome to apply.

Masters studies (Half Bursary):

  • AIMS graduate who wish to undertake PhD studies at a recognised South African University,
  • University will pay an equivalent amount towards the bursary,
  • University will bypass the fee difference for international and local students,
  • Studies will begin in the February of the upcoming year,
  • Students will do a max of 10 hours tutoring/ week.

PhD studies (Half Bursary):

  • AIMS graduate who wish to undertake PhD studies at a recognised South African University,
  • University will pay an equivalent amount towards the bursary,
  • Studies will begin within 8 months of the AIMS programme being finished.

  • Academic record to date,
  • Short CV.

  • Confirmation to study within the Masters programme and confirmation of a half bursary award (with the bursary amount) – letter from the proposed supervisor,
  • Proposal of intended study (max 2 pages),
  • Short CV of the supervisor (if not already supervised prior AIMS students).

PhD studies (Half Bursary):

  • Confirmation to study within the Doctorate programme and confirmation of a half bursary award (with the bursary amount) – letter from the proposed supervisor,
  • Proposal of intended research topic,
  • Short CV of the supervisor (if not already supervised prior AIMS students).
