Requirements
Applications must include certified copies of all documentation and must ensure they completed the application fully, as well as sign it. It is suggested that candidates also include a Curriculum Vitae and cover letter with their application. Requirements will differ, depending on the career path, yet there are some basic requirements.
Candidates will require the following for most Learnerships:
- You must hold a valid Matric Certificate
- Candidates must be a South African citizens with a valid ID Document
- All candidates must be computer literate
- Candidates must be proficient in English (speak, read & write)
- Applicants must hold a degree or diploma in the field applying for
- Candidates must be unemployed
- All candidates must be between 18 and 25 years old
- Must not have been part of another learnership
Candidates with the following attributes are preferred:

- Can work independently
- Works well as part of a team
- Great planning skills
- Great organizing skills
- Analytically orientated
- Great negotiation skills
- Accurate
- Detail orientated
Candidates from specific communities or previously disadvantaged backgrounds will receive preference.
Application
Department of Public Works online learnerships applications is not available. Candidates may find applications at their local department office, and also return the completed form with required documentation to the same office. The department may also advertise these learnerships by means of advertisements in newspapers, career exhibitions, radio broadcasting or even by visiting educational institutes. Candidates are asked to please ensure that all documents are copied and certified. Please do not send your original documents with the application.
The following documents must accompany your application:
- Affidavit
- Motivation Letter
- ID Document of Student
- ID Document of parents/guardian
- Proof of financial need
- Admission letter from the Institute of Higher Learning
- Academic Records
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Progress Reports (where applicable)
Candidates must please ensure that the application form is completed in legible writing. All fields must be completed, and the application signed by the applicant. Because of the high amount of applications they receive yearly, only those who have qualified will be contacted. The Department asks that candidates please not contact them.
Only shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. No late applications will be considered, or applications missing a signature, or documentation or are not completed fully. Candidates who have not had any communication after 60 days from the closing date, can assume their application was unsuccessful. These learnerships may be for a duration of 12 months to 2 years. Applications usually close during August each year, thus, interested candidates must ensure their applications are in before the closing date. The idea of this learnerships is to aid in the stabilizing of the economy and promote growth within South Africa.
